At a temple in Okayama Prefecture, they worship a 300-year-old mummified mermaid. They call it the mermaid mummy. It stands about 1 foot tall. It has an upper-body resembling a human. And a lower body resembling a fishtail.

Mermaid mummy baffles Researchers.
Despite its 300-year-old age, the mermaid mummy has retained its nails, teeth, and hair. Also, the carcass has an eerie expression of a screaming child. The mummy was on display for public viewing about 40 years ago. But now it is in a fireproof safe so that it won’t deteriorate.
According to the note inside the box, Fishermen caught the mysterious creature in a fishing net. They captured it off the coast of Tosa Province (now Kochi Prefecture) between 1736 and 1741. The mummy passed to other owners after the Meiji Era (1868-1912). And then, later on, the Enjuin temple acquired it.
